Fun Stuff- Mike Beaver's hobby page

Last Update June 28, 1999

This is the page where I share some of my hobby interests. These are wide ranging, and usually involve something technical. There are some links to sites of interest at the bottom. My interests include electronic circuits - this has led to real work in embedded control, mechanical systems, metal working, wood working, and high vacuum.

My current hot topic is high vacuum. I have acquired most of the components needed to put together a small diffusion pumped system capable of evaporating aluminum, etc. I need a bell jar (preferably 14" diameter - the standard 18" jars are very heavy) and have extra valves and fittings. I am also looking for a TIG welder capable of welding aluminum, as I am building most of the components I lack. Let me know if you need something or can fill one of my gaps. I prefer to trade, as this really is a hobby. Also, I have some technical references, so may be able to answer questions. I'm also interested in designing an electron beam deposition source.

I expect to add to this page as I have time, so check back occasionally.

Links to sites of interest

Protean Logic (formerly Versatech). This is the source for the FBASIC TICKIT controller, which is quite capable, easy to use, and low cost. It is in the same class as the BASIC STAMP, but lower cost and with a slightly different feature set. It does 32 bit arithmetic!! See the embedded control section for the square root function library file.
The Bell Jar This is a true effort of love by Steve Hansen. If you are interested in vacuum as a hobby, you need to subscribe to this journal. Also, you are encouraged to submit articles for publication.
Nuts & Volts Magazine This magazine is a good source of hobby-level electronic information. The articles are good, with a long series of BASIC STAMP articles and the ads are a good resource if you want to do anything electronic.
Digikey This is the best source I have found for new electronic components. Their on-line catalog is great, and the links to manufacturer data sheets are very helpful. It's like having access to the data sheets for any component you want.
